The Sealyham Terrier is one of the rarest and most historically distinctive terrier breeds in the world — a compact, low-slung, all-white Welsh terrier developed in the mid-19th century on the Sealyham estate in Pembrokeshire, Wales, by Captain John Owen Tucker-Edwardes. Tucker-Edwardes spent over two decades selectively breeding for a dog capable of hunting otter, polecat, and fox in the dense undergrowth and rocky terrain of the Welsh countryside, crossing breeds including the Dandie Dinmont Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Wire Fox Terrier, and possibly the Bull Terrier to produce the ideal working terrier. The result was a dog of remarkable courage and tenacity in a compact, white-coated package — the white coat was deliberately selected so hunters could distinguish the dog from its quarry in dense cover. The Sealyham enjoyed a remarkable surge of popularity in the early 20th century, becoming a fashionable companion among Hollywood stars and British royalty alike — Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Alfred Hitchcock, Elizabeth Taylor, and Princess Margaret all kept Sealyhams. The breed is now classified as a Vulnerable Native Breed by the UK Kennel Club, with fewer than 300 puppies registered annually in Britain. The Sealyham Terrier was recognized by the AKC in 1911.
